How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Scooter in Zanzibar? 2026 Price Guide
One of the first things travelers ask us is simple: how much does it actually cost to rent a scooter in Zanzibar? Here’s an honest, up-to-date breakdown of what you should budget for.
Daily Rental Rates
Scooter rental prices in Zanzibar generally range from around $14 to $30 USD per day, depending on the scooter model, engine size, rental duration, and which company you book with. Automatic 125cc-150cc scooters, the most popular choice for tourists, typically sit in the $18-$26/day range. Renting for a full week or longer usually brings the daily rate down.
The Zanzibar Driving Permit Fee
On top of the scooter rental itself, you’ll need the mandatory Zanzibar driving permit, which costs $20 USD. Some rental companies include this in their quoted price, others add it separately, so always ask upfront whether it’s included.
Security Deposit
Most rental companies, including us, require a refundable security deposit before handing over the scooter. This is standard practice and protects both sides, you get it back at the end of your rental as long as the scooter is returned in the condition you received it.
Fuel
Fuel is not included in the rental price. Petrol is sold by the liter and stations mostly accept cash (TZS or USD). It’s worth filling up before heading to more rural parts of the island, as fuel stations are sparser outside the main towns.
Delivery Fees
Many rental companies offer free pickup and delivery within Stone Town, but charge an extra fee (commonly around $10) to deliver the scooter to hotels, the airport, or the ferry terminal outside the main town area. Always confirm delivery costs when booking, especially if you’re staying in Nungwi, Paje, or another beach area.
What’s Usually Included
- Helmet
- Basic third-party insurance (coverage varies, always ask what it includes)
- Vehicle registration documents
- Roadside assistance for mechanical issues
Extra Costs to Watch For
Damage caused by careless riding is typically the renter’s responsibility, so it’s worth asking exactly what the insurance covers before you sign anything. A transparent company will walk you through this clearly rather than leaving it vague.
