Scooter vs Car Rental in Zanzibar: Which Should You Choose?

Scooter or car? It’s one of the first decisions to make when planning how to get around Zanzibar. Both have their place, here’s an honest comparison to help you choose.

Cost

Scooters are the clear winner on price. Daily rental typically runs $14-30 USD, compared to roughly $30-50+ USD per day for a car. If budget is a priority and you’re traveling solo or as a couple, a scooter stretches your money much further.

Flexibility and Parking

Scooters win here too. You can park almost anywhere, weave through Stone Town’s narrow alleys with ease, and never worry about finding a space near a beach or restaurant. Cars are far more restricted, especially in the tight streets of Stone Town, where many roads aren’t practical for a car at all.

Comfort and Weather Protection

This is where cars pull ahead. If you’re traveling with family, carrying a lot of luggage, or simply want to stay dry during a sudden downpour, a car is the more comfortable option. Scooters offer no protection from rain or sun, and luggage space is limited to what you can strap on.

Group Size

Most scooters are built for two people. If you’re traveling as a group of three or more, you’ll need multiple scooters or a car. For couples and solo travelers, a scooter is usually all you need.

The Left-Hand Driving Adjustment

Zanzibar drives on the left. This applies to both cars and scooters, but the adjustment tends to feel more intuitive on a scooter, where you’re more naturally positioned to follow the flow of traffic. If you’ve never driven on the left before, some travelers find a scooter a gentler way to adjust than being behind the wheel of a car.

Which Should You Choose?

If you’re a solo traveler, a couple, or a small group who values flexibility, low cost, and getting closer to the island as you ride, a scooter is likely your best fit. If you’re traveling with family, need to protect a lot of luggage, or simply prefer more comfort and weather protection, a car makes more sense. Many travelers actually do both, renting a scooter for a few days to explore Stone Town and nearby beaches, then switching to a car for longer trips further afield.
