Scooter Safety Tips for Riding in Zanzibar

Riding a scooter is one of the most enjoyable ways to see Zanzibar, but the island’s roads have their own quirks. A little preparation goes a long way toward keeping your trip safe and stress-free.

Zanzibar Drives on the Left

Like the UK, traffic in Zanzibar keeps to the left side of the road. If you’re used to driving on the right, give yourself time to adjust, it takes most riders a short while to feel natural.

Always Wear a Helmet

Helmet use is required for both rider and passenger. Beyond the legal side, it’s simply the most important thing you can do to protect yourself, roads outside the main towns can be uneven and unpredictable.

Watch for Potholes, Sand, and Uneven Surfaces

Main roads connecting Stone Town to Nungwi and the east coast beaches are generally in good condition, but side roads and rural routes can have potholes, loose gravel, or sandy patches. Slow down in these areas and keep both hands ready on the controls.

Expect Pedestrians, Animals, and Unpredictable Traffic

Zanzibar’s roads are shared space. Pedestrians, cyclists, and sometimes livestock can appear with little warning, especially near villages and schools. Ride defensively, keep your speed down in populated areas, and always be ready to slow further.

Stick to Daylight Riding When Possible

If you’re still getting used to the roads, riding during daylight hours is far easier and safer. Street lighting is limited outside the main towns, and hazards like potholes or animals are much harder to spot after dark.

Respect the Speed Limits

Speed limits are generally low, often around 50 km/h on many roads, and for good reason given the mix of narrow roads, pedestrians, and variable surfaces. Slower riding also gives you more time to react to the unexpected.

Police Checkpoints Are Routine

You’ll likely pass through a few police checkpoints during your trip, this is completely normal. Stay calm, be polite, and have your Zanzibar driving permit, home license, and ID ready to show. Most stops take just a minute or two.

Don’t Ride on the Beach

It might look tempting, and you may even see locals doing it, but riding a scooter on the beach or shoreline is not permitted in Zanzibar. Keep to the roads.

Inspect Your Scooter Before You Ride

Before setting off, take a minute to check the tires, brakes, lights, and mirrors. A reputable rental company will hand over a scooter in good working order, but it only takes a moment to confirm for yourself.
