Best Time of Year to Rent a Scooter in Zanzibar: A Weather Guide

Zanzibar is warm year-round, but the season you visit in makes a real difference to your scooter riding experience. Here’s what to expect month by month.

Dry Season: June to October

This is the best window for scooter riding in Zanzibar. Rainfall drops right off, roads stay dry and grippy, and visibility is excellent. Daytime temperatures sit around 28-30°C, warm but manageable while riding. This is also peak tourist season, so book your scooter in advance if you’re traveling in these months.

January and February: A Quieter Dry Window

Often overlooked, January and February are also dry, with rainfall staying low. It runs hotter than the June-October season, with daytime highs pushing past 32°C, so plan rides for the cooler morning or late afternoon hours if you can. Crowds are thinner too, which makes for easier riding on popular routes.

The Long Rains: March to May

This is Zanzibar’s wettest period, and the toughest time of year for scooter riding. Heavy afternoon downpours are common, especially in April, which is typically the wettest month. Roads, particularly rural and unpaved routes, can become slick, muddy, or flooded. If you do rent during this period, plan shorter rides, keep an eye on the sky, and build in flexibility for sudden weather changes.

The Short Rains: November and December

Rainfall picks up again in November and December, but far more gently than the March-May season. Showers tend to be brief, often in the morning, clearing up quickly afterward. Riding is generally still comfortable during this period, just keep a light rain layer handy.

If riding is a big part of your Zanzibar plans, June through October is the safest bet for consistently dry roads. January and February are a great alternative if you don’t mind the extra heat and want fewer crowds. If your trip happens to fall in the March-May rainy season, it’s still very doable, just build a bit more flexibility into your daily plans and expect the occasional rain-delayed afternoon.
